Strictly (not) dancing…

I think I have never danced in my entire life – not in church, not on my solitary foray into a night club, not at all the birthday parties I attended as a kid, not ever. I don’t remember if it was a concious decision, or if it was/still is a result of a deep seated phobia even I am unaware of, or if I have always lacked that seemingly natural ability to coordinate the limbs in resonance with external tunes, or if I just plain can’t be bothered.

I have always consoled myself by declaring that I am musing over the words of the songs – dissecting the rhymes, pondering the nuances, or sometimes inserting my own words to see if they rhyme better, or if they mean more for me that way. Don’t get me wrong, there have been times when I came close; days when I actually shuffled from side to side as though I were part of an invisible choir from antiquity or nodded my head and plucked strings on an imaginary acoustic guitar in tune with the song being belted out.

Today was one of them days, perhaps the huge cup of coffee I drank this morning as I stepped out into 3 degree centigrade temperatures was culpable, or it was a genuine case of shopping therapy after I ogled my latest acquisition for the umpteenth time, or perhaps it was Charlie leading worship at church, and squeezing in one of my favourite Hillsong songs… Bottom line is I almost danced, but I didn’t.. And I’m left still wondering what dancing must feel like…

  1. LOL…
I can relate! Not so big on the dancing either. I simply shuffle my feet and wriggle my body in accordance, managing some lame move. πŸ™‚ But if you feel you danced, you danced then. Happy Holidays!

  2. Dance is so liberating, dude I cannot dance to save my life but put a couple of drinks in me and I can dance for hours, whether I am dancing to the rhythm of the song is another matter but sha try it, you just might like it.

  8. hehe, this sounds like a case of baby steps: it's only a matter of time before you break into full-out dancing!

Dancing alone is a great way to get see what you look like dancing in order to compare it to what you see others doing (if self consciousness is the reason you're not dancing).

What I've noticed is that if you're really taken by the music you might not even notice that you're dancing…I love letting the music guide my movements (lol no matter how silly I may look!).

  9. LOL…my thoughts in church today,I was the only one dancing if you call swaying side to side with my feet planted in one spot and my hands behind my back and my fingers tapping my arms dancing. I got to thinking that I was the best dancer seeing that others did not even twitch:))
Im better than you though, I can dance in the privacy of my room and in front of my really close friends but never in public!
You are missing a lot (kettle calling pot black:)), Get on the dance floor maybe after fortifying yourself with some palmie, maybe if you break the jinx you will start dancing!

    • @gee — I'm sure dancing is in another realm of its own! I genuinely envy peeps like my kid bruv who can dance to anything!
@tatababe — LOL.. So they tell me o.. But its like the conundrum of a fish – I don't know what's its like, so I can't really know that I miss it..
@GoodNaijaGirl — Perhaps my taste in music is so queer that its unlikely that I'll hear a song that will make me dance.. Maybe sometime in future..
@Olaoluwatomi — LOL @ swaying from side to side.. That's a good one.. Is that really dancing though? That palmie angle is looking promising though!
@dante — LOL @ you being liberated! Perhaps I should actively seek liberation too o…. O boy, I've been scaling things down in preps for 2010 o.. hence the vanishing..

  11. lol… Bros, u funny gan o! Are you being serious? I love to dance, and I don't understand why people can't dance (The Mr. is one of those people. I don't know how he even got to me sef. lol) . I seriously consider it a source of wonderment.

Try and practice in 'solitary confinement' first o, before you hurt somebody πŸ˜€ I am laffing out loud for real.

  13. @BBB — LOL.. Not quite sure of weird.. Maybe just different… Certainly didn't help that I spent my formative years in ultra-orthodox settings..
@JayCee — LOL.. I don't dispute it might be fun.. I just lack the ability…
@Nefertiti — LOL…Some of us are special like that joor…. Solitary confinement, I'll add that to the palmwine suggestion – that should be a clincher.
@Ms. O — Good for you then. Perhaps I'll consider the solitary + palmwine suggestions!

    Thanks peeps

  14. @miss definitely maybe — perhaps that is yet another compelling reason to try.. even if it is merely flailing my arms in the privacy of my bedroom.
@Original Mgbeke — Oh well, nothing says the wedding will not be complete without ME dancing o….. We'll find a way around that.

    LOL@ I almost danced
I dont even know what to say
I guess others have said enough

Hey, I just remembered a guy I 'set' for in Uni, he didnt dance too, always stiff, but that day he had to move his body by force, and in front a crowd(even though the dance was a disaster), maybe I'd blog about that someday. I wish I knew you then….you for move your body small.
    Anyway, nothing do you

  18. Ummm, as a veteran wedding guest, first of all…during the reception, the groom and bride dance in as the official couple of the day.
Then you gotta do the 'couple's first dance' with your bride so hon, i doubt there will be any way of getting around that one.
    Live a little. πŸ™‚
