Newton’s First Law of (e)Motion

“Corpus omne perseverare in statu suo quiescendi vel movendi uniformiter in directum, nisi quatenus a viribus impressis cogitur statum illum mutare.”

I was involved in a little discussion on my FB wall with a friend of mine on Newton’s Laws of Motion when I inadvertedly typed “straight lin emotion” instead of “straight line motion”… Our discussion quickly switched to how the three laws were largely symptomatic of human behavior. After several back and forths, we finally agreed on this interpretation…

Every human being will stay in a state of like, hate or neutral feeling except insofar as he/she is enticed to change state by force (yarnings, doings, levels, money etc) impressed…….

More seriously though, the true interpretation of the latin is
“Every body perseveres in its state of being at rest or of moving uniformly straight forward, except insofar as it is compelled to change its state by force impressed”.

  1. I have serious "beef" with Newton's Law of motion. I remember being spanked cos of it."who touched this?"…"who spoilt that?"…then my dad quoting "Every object will remain in its state of rest or uniform motion unless acted upon by an external force"I swear, i knew that law at age 8!I like you guys' interpretation though…less traumatic!

  2. WOW… Back with a vengeance too.. Good to know you've turned the curve! Unfortunately, my first brush with Newton's First Law came cos I flunked a physics test so badly that my Dad was invited for a discussion. Needless to say i got my hide so ripped apart that I never ever forgot it!

  3. damn, bumight, u knew this law at the age of 8..ur poor brain..newton was a very wise man..one of my scientist-dream inspirations..

  4. Interesting interpretation right there..Maybe if the Physics teacher I had growing up had tried explaining it that way I wouldn't have had to do the bloody thing twice..The one I seem to remember though was something about actions and equal opposite reactions..Something like that anyways..

  5. @RocNaija — LOL.. Quite possibly, but then Physics teachers always seemed to be all dour and austere.. The one about action and reaction being equal and opposite is the 3rd Law which also has applications in the field of "emotional dynamics"@Buttercup — Have to agree, Newton and Einstein were the two dudes I envied back in the day!

  6. Danny the efiko! Newton's law again?Newton's law……………I don tire to dey hear that thing, it looks like it goes everywhere with me….although it contains some life truths…one of such sayings i have had in my mind for some weeks now….."nothing moves unless you make a move"

  7. I like this, law of eMotion. Science of life. Bumight, bumight, if only your answer had been "I must have moved it in error" and not "i don't know" maybe you could've saved yourself a spanking or two and the education too. lol.

  8. @Dabizniz – Still working on how to define emotional momentum.@fantasyqueen — looking forward to reading your tots — if wt i've seen on yrs is indicative of what you'll write it promises to be on hell of a ride@Olufunke — LOL @ Efiko, I flunked my first ever Physics test — which made me learn the three laws by heart… Guess the similarities re-inforce the 'paralell universe' concept@poeticallytinted — coming from you, its flattering@Lati — NERD? No.. Just appreciative of the sheer brilliance of Isaac Newton…@Madam SSD — Much thanks

  9. Wow. U are such a nerd! Who in the world associates newton's law with matters of the heart? I can picture u danny, and for some reason u are looking like Norbit… lol

  10. Only a geek will find a correlation between newton's law and emotional matters…so i am with Neffie on this one!But sa, it makes sense, i think ….maybe you need to even break it down for me, i think i'm being slow..hahaha!

  11. @Neffie/Writefreak — LOL.. Doubt I'm a nerd/geek tho… Unfortunately the guy who insitgated the discussion doesn't blog….So I had to be the mouth piece!

  12. @Tigress – Definitely think its an interesting topic too.. Hopefully he and I can discuss it a little further and expand the 2nd and 3rd laws too….

  13. Danny, i am looking at the book you are reading….I know Max as a good writer, hope you enjoy the bookI would comment on Newton's law if only i listened in physics class

  14. @naijagirl – LOL…. It was forced into my own head.. had no choice than to learn it….Max's the bom.. First read "In the Eye of The Storm" it just blew me away.. He does have a way with words!

  15. [ON A RANDOM NOTE] Danny, dont you just love it when people say things like "hmmm very deep", "makes a lot of sense", "i couldnt have put it better" or some such random, two-liner after a post? Or when they drop a comment that's racing in the opposite direction of what you were saying? LOL. You can tell they're either clueless or they didnt read. Hehehehe. Now to your post….'Very deep. Makes a lot of sense. Spot on. I always wondered why "flammable" means the same thing as "inflammable"' hehehehe

  21. grrr *shudder* physics…blech..lol…Newton however, i do like, cuz them laws were cram and go and pretty easy to visualize….and it does make sense with the emotions thing…but yoo iz a nerd!! lol..to take emotions and tie them to physics….nooooooo!!!! physics shall NOT be involved in that part of my life except…ahem..cough cough…l8az jare! ๐Ÿ˜›

  22. "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction"…I agree more with this law than Newton's other 2 laws on motion- or maybe i shud say i always have more 2 say on this law than d other 2.Although i do think Newton applied the Law of inertia to objects and u have interestingly related it to humans….

  23. @Aloted — LOL…. At lest you snatched a C in the GCEs… That's all that counts in the long run@Icequeen — No physics in yr life except????@Confessions – Quite right! The 3rd law is almost a direct relationship in both the physical and eMotional worlds.. Now the 2nd law? I dunno!

  24. i certainly agree with the interpretation…besides newton's laws of motion are very applicable to life cos they are laws of nature…though I found ur interpretion very humouring, I know it is true…LOL @ Straight lin emotion…
